Orders, 1769-1775.

Copies of orders issued by the collector of customs at the U.S. Customs House at Salem, Mass. (sometimes identified as Salem and Marblehead). The orders are primarily directed at land waiters and tidesmen (customs officials) at Gloucester, Marblehead, and other ports of entry overseen by the Salem custom house and relate to searches of cargo and vessels, personnel, and charges of misconduct. Among the persons corresponding are John Nutting and John Fisher, collectors, and A.F. Phillips and Richard Silvester, land waiters at Gloucester.
